40k Farm Planting and Christmas Party
Sunday December 18, 10.30am - 4pm
178 Highett Road, Melton, Ph 9746 7031

Supercharge your diaries for a special event at 40k farm!

We're overdue to rock the front paddock with summer vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, herbs and beans. And we're very lucky to have special guest Kirsten Larsen to report back after her extensive visitation of CSA's in North America recently. A great opportunity to learn more about Community Supported Agriculture, and the various models employed overseas. Naturally we'll be discussing how that applies to both you, and us.

We're also toasting summer rains, our wonderful supporters (you), the ever amazing basalt plains, and our two new moo cows, Bobby and Stella!

So whether you're up for some relaxing farm time, learning more about CSA's, or putting some veggies in the ground, we do hope you'll come along; there'll be plenty happening on the day. BYO hat/gumboots as suiting weather on the day. A small contribution to a shared lunch also most welcome, but not obligatory.

But don't fret if you can't make it - we're now opening the farm every Sunday, and inviting our members to come any (or every!) Sunday that suits them. Open to prospective members too. We'll try and keep the website updated so you can see what's on, week by week. This way, something will always be happening, that will happen faster with your help. And if you ever feel like a trip to the farm, now you can, without waiting for open days, exclusive visits from The Queen, and the like.

The 'Forty K Farm' is a 30 acre property about 40 kms west of Melbourne's CBD. It has 5 acres planted out with established apple, pear, almond and olive trees. There’s also 40 chooks who provide good eggs each week, and bees. It has great potential for vegetables, livestock and more.

The vision for the farm includes, in time, operating on a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model to grow produce that may serve some of the needs of the various organic food coops operating in the west of Melbourne (more). The farm is a opportunity for many groups and individuals to take a step closer to the source of our food and reconnect with the systems that sustain us.

Events that will be run throughout the year include festival days, revolving around the various times of harvest and maintenance at the farm. We also plan to run workshops in conjunction with other groups such as VEG. These include:

  fruit tree pruning
chook maintenance
farm irrigation
tree planting
preserving

There is opportunity for individuals or groups to run activities at the farm. The previous tenants of the farm - People Like You - ran a recovery and mental wellbeing program and had a fortnightly day at the farm where people worked, spend time together and shared a BBQ lunch. There is an opportunity to run similar programs.

We are presently developing a structure to adequately fund the running costs of the project. One aspect of this is through sale of eggs. Another is through membership where households or individuals will be invited to pay a small amount each week and become a more active part of the farm community. more

We are looking for people to be involved. Let us know if you’ve ideas of how you’d like to share in possibilities at the farm. We’re keen to grow our reference group too.

There's also some items we're looking for. See our Wish List and let us know if you can donate, loan or lend periodically any of these things.
